| Pharmacological Effects | • Cardiovascular: marked influence on cardiovascular system; in anesthetized cats, intravenous injection of alcohol extract increased blood perfusion to coronary artery by up to 95% and lasted for approximately 40 minutes; in addition, it lowered heart rate (by about 12%), decreased oxygen consumption by cardiac muscle, and increased blood perfusion to other parts of body, including ears and kidneys; positive effect in treatment of cardiac ischemia or angina in dogs • Antiplatelet: associated with inhibition of platelet aggregation; a study found the inhibition to be 2.3 times stronger than inhibition exerted by Dan Shen (Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae) • Antihypertensive: water and alcohol extracts have marked effectiveness to lower blood pressure; this was achieved with oral or intraperitoneal injections, in awake or anesthetized animals, such as rats, cats, and dogs; duration of action was approximately 2 hours; there was no inhibition of respiratory system; proposed mechanisms of antihypertensive effect include inhibition of adrenalin or dilation of blood vessels • Antibiotic: antibacterial and antiviral functions against Bacillus dysenteriae, leptospira, influenza virus, herpes virus, and dermatophytes; water decoction was found to have stronger antibiotic effect than alcohol decoction |
