Pharmacological Effects | • Effect on nasal mucosa: topical application of essential oil associated with reduction of mucous secretion, reduction of inflammation, and relief of nasal obstruction • Antihypertensive: water and alcohol extracts, given via intramuscular or intraperitoneal injections, associated with decrease of blood pressure in anesthetized dogs, cats, rabbits, and rats. Intravenous injection sometimes associated with stimulation of respiratory system; in other experiments, effective in cases of primary hypertension, but not necessarily effective in cases of secondary hypertension, such as renal hypertension • Analgesic: in laboratory experiments, administration of 6.5 g/kg of alcohol extract and 15 g/kg of water extract showed comparable analgesic effect in mice • Uterine stimulant: stimulatory effect on the uterus in dogs and rabbits; onset of action starts 20 to 60 minutes after ingestion, and lasts for 8 to 24 hours • Antibiotic: decoction has inhibitory effect on dermatomycoses, and some species of streptococcus and staphylococcus |
