Contraindications (TCM) CI: Acrid & sl. Warm, may damage Qi and Yin; do not drink as tea on daily or long-term basis; warm decoction may causes vomiting (alleviated by adding Xing Ren, Huang Lian, Huang Qin & other bitter/descending herbs) (Exterior def. with sweating)

Chemical Composition Essential oils 0.1-0.9% (carvacrol, m-cymene, p-cymene, o-cymene, r-terpinene, humulene, α-phellandrene, β-ionone, α-terpineol, eugenol, credrol), quercetin, apigenin, 2-methylbaicalein, ursolic acid, syringic acid, caffeic acid
Pharmacological Effects • Antipyretic: essential oil has antipyretic and diaphoretic effects
• Gastrointestinal: stimulates secretion of gastric acid, inhibits peristalsis in mice, rats, guinea pigs
• Antibiotic: inhibits E. coli, S. aureus, β-hemolytic streptococcus, some dermatomyces
• Others: possibly expectorant and diuretic effects
