Pharmacological Effects | • Hemostatic: unprocessed and charred forms may shorten bleeding time; charred Huai Hua stronger than unprocessed herb in this hemostatic function • Effect on blood vessels: rutin and quercetin have been shown to maintain integrity of capillaries by decreasing permeability and increasing flexibility • Cardiovascular: administration of rutin and quercetin to frogs demonstrated positive inotropic and negative chronotropic effects, leading to increased cardiac output and decreased heart rate; these substances also improve blood perfusion to cardiac muscle by dilating coronary artery; administration of water and alcohol extracts of Huai Hua have marked antihypertensive effects, as demonstrated in anesthetized dogs • Antihyperlipidemic: quercetin associated with reduction of liver and plasma cholesterol levels; demonstrated promising protective and therapeutic effects for atherosclerosis treatment • Anti-inflammatory: administration rutin and quercetin via intraperitoneal route demonstrated marked anti-inflammatory effects in mice and rats with arthritis • Antispasmodic and antiulcer: rutin and quercetin have been shown to reduce contractility of intestines and decrease secretion of gastric acid; quercetin is five times more potent than rutin in its antispasmodic effect • Protective effect against radiation: administration of rutin reduced severity of adverse effects and incidence of fatality in mice exposed to x-ray radiation • Preventative effect against frostbite: rutin has protective effect against frostbite, most effective in treating cases of third -degree frostbite |
